Legend. Neointimal neovascularization is abundantly observed in vulnerable atherosclerotic plaques. These vessels are leaky and fragile and prone to intraplaque hemorrhage. Red blood cell membranes are a rich source of free cholesterol. See pages 2076 and 2077.
