Cumulative incidence of the first of any of the predefined cardiovascular disease (CVD) outcomes (A) and of the first occurrence of nonfatal MI, stroke, or death from CVD (B). Compared with conventional treatment, intensive diabetic treatment reduced the risk of any predefined CVD outcome by 42% (95% confidence interval [CI] 9% to 63%; p = 0.02) (A) and reduced the risk of the first occurrence of nonfatal MI, stroke, or death from CVD by 57% (95% CI 12% to 79%; p = 0.02) (B).
