Figure 4 Effect of catalase (CAT), glutathione (GSH), NAC, mannitol (MAN), and SOD on myocyte apoptosis. Myocytes were treated with 10–6 mol/l of doxorubicin in the presence or absence of either catalase (4 x 104 U/l), GSH (15 x 10–3 mol/l), NAC (10–4 mol/l), MAN (2 x 10–2 mol/l), or SOD (1.2 x 105 U/l). Fluorescent-stained nuclei of apoptotic myocytes were analyzed morphologically and expressed as the percentage of total nuclei, as described in the Methods section. Control myocytes were incubated in serum-deprived DMEM without any chemicals (n = 6). *p < 0.0001 vs. control.  p < 0.01 vs. doxorubicin.  p < 0.0001 vs. doxorubicin.
