Although the figure separates the sodium and water retaining systems and the opposing natriuretic and diuretic systems, considerable interaction between the individual components occurs. ANP = atrial natriuretic peptide; BNP = brain natriuretic peptide; NO = nitric oxide; PG = vasodilatory prostaglandins.
