(Both panels) The solid and parallel dashed lines define the relationship between midwall fractional shortening and mean systolic stress, as well as its 95% prediction interval, and calculated using a least squares linear regression analysis for 84 patients found not to have cardiac pathology. The shortening-stress relationship was characterized as noted in the "Methods" section identically for both the 84 patients used to generate the regression analysis and for the study patients having AS.
