Figure 1 Survival probability curves for cardiovascular mortality in different subgroups of subjects according to the changes in systolic and diastolic blood pressure, in the IPC Study (upper panel) and in the Paris Prospective Study I (lower panel). Reference group (RG; Sys Dia ) included men whose systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure did not change over time. The Sys Dia group included men whose systolic blood pressure increased and diastolic blood pressure decreased. Other Sys included those whose systolic blood pressure increased, whereas diastolic blood pressure did not change or else increased (groups Sys Dia and Sys Dia ). Other Dia included those whose diastolic blood pressure decreased, whereas systolic blood pressure did not change or else decreased (groups Sys Dia and Sys Dia ). In both cohorts the Sys Dia group showed higher cardiovascular mortality versus the RG (p < 0.05 in both cohorts). Other Dia groups showed similar cardiovascular mortality versus the RG, whereas other Sys groups presented intermediate cardiovascular mortality rates.
