N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (N-BNP) level is displayed on a log-scale. The area of each plotting symbol is proportional to the amount of statistical information (i.e., number of events); the vertical lines through the points represent 95% confidence intervals (CI). Risk estimates are adjusted for age, gender, prior diseases, baseline drug use, randomization to simvastatin, and major vascular risk factors (see Table 1). A 1-SD increase in measured log N-BNP at baseline is associated with (on average) a 30% (95% CI 25 to 36) increase in the relative risk of major vascular events, a 51% (95% CI 41 to 62) increase in the relative risk of major coronary event, a 23% (95% CI 13 to 34) increase in the relative risk of stroke, and a 3.4-fold (95% CI 2.9 to 3.9) increase in the relative risk of heart failure (HF).
